Christian historical fiction. Ephraim is an "unconscionable" (p. 472) Jewish usurer. Includes a few illustrations of Biblical interest; for instance, "The Sacrifice of Abraham" (p. 563). The 1896 Benziger Brothers ed. (xii, 324 p.) has a simplified title page and omits Rev. Brennan’s "Preface to the Illustrated Edition." This reduced-length and size edition also omits the color frontispiece, "St. Agnes, Virgin and Martyr." Contains the publisher’s list of Catholic publications (16 p.).The cover, if not rebound, depicts a Christian martyr in the arena with a lion.
