The references to Jews are uniformly negative ("They seem to have conquered Poland, where they swarm, and the whole substance of which they suck out," p. 155). Ségur follows with remarks about the Jews being despised by the Russians and the readiness of the Jews to serve as spies, as well as traders of provisions, to every side in the campaign of 1812 in their pursuit of lucre ("… there is nothing that they will not sell").
