The few references to the Jews tend to be hostile and prejudiced. See, for instance, "Jew Shylocks" (vol. 1, p. 286), or the author’s retelling of the golden calf (Ex. 32:20) reduced to "drinkable conditions" and the "pestering Jews ... retching, gagging, and twisting in their inwards [innards?], getting a full dose of the consequences of their idolatry" (vol. 1, p. 252). With respect to the Jews found at Yokohama, Japan, "The ubiquitous Jew is here working and doing after his stereotyped way" (vol. 2, p. 259, most likely an oblique reference to loansharking; compare with vol. 1, p. 186, about dowry money borrowed by parents in India from the usurious "sons of Jacob").
