Notes

A playbill. Facsimile of the cover illustration is in Timothy B. Spears, 100 Years on the Road: The Travelling Salesman in American Culture (New Haven, c1995), within the narrative on pp. 136-41. Includes text of "Der Drummer," a poem by Charles Francis Adams. At least three variant printings exist; they can be readily distinguished by the cover’s image of Samuel, typically with a display case in each hand and either with or without a walking stick under his left arm. Other distinguishing features are the number of buttons visible on his vest and if a suit pocket square is present. There is also a standing pose variant of Samuel turned toward his right and without display cases. A touring performance may have the venue and dates printed in the gutter.
